Portrait and Travel Photography Ideas in Positano, Italy | Weekend in Positano

Portrait and Travel Photography Ideas in Positano, Italy | Weekend in Positano

It's strange to think that this time 5 days ago, we were all the way up in Italy's north exploring the Italian Alps. Our last stop after a crazy week in Italy was the one I was most excited for. We are headed to Positano on the Amalfi Coast!

Dan and I had just spent our last 2 days in Florence before we started making our longest road trip yet to the Amalfi Coast. Since the drive was so long, we ended up making a detour to a beautiful locals-only beach somewhere in the south of Italy before making the rest of the trip at night to Positano.

When we arrived, we parked our car on the side of a cliff and watched the moon glistening over the water and soon after, watched the sun rise over the mountains illuminating all the beautiful homes, hotels and restaurants built in every nook and cranny on the mountains. I couldn’t believe I was here!

I also just want to mention that I am super proud of Dan for being able to drive on the streets of the Amalfi Coast. Every road up and down the mountain looks like a one way street, but really can fit two cars each way. There are people walking on each side of the road, vespas are constantly zooming past and restaurants and shops literally set up their tables and goods on either sides of the roads! So on top of all the constant winding and either driving up a really steep hill or down it, there were also soo many obstacles to constantly look out for! I don’t think I would be brave enough to drive in Positano.

We were in Positano for three days over the weekend and we spent our time here walking up and down hundreds of stairs - literally! you can see it all in my vlog here & here! - eating delicious Italian food, soaking in the crystal blue ocean, walking through all the beautiful alleyways looking at the local stores and just generally sitting and admiring the amazing views. This place is like nothing I’ve ever seen before and I would constantly catch myself just looking up at everything in awe.

I learnt so many things about being in Positano while I was there that I didn’t realise or think about even though this place has been on my bucket list for years! So I was thinking of making a video about tips for your first time visiting Positano or the Amalfi Coast. Let me know if you guys want to see it and I can create it for you! In the meantime though, I did vlog every day during our week in Italy and you can watch all the videos here!

But for now, I’m going to leave with you all the photos we took during our few days in this beautiful place, enjoy!

Golden Hour Travel Photography Canon 5Dmk4 | Locals-only Beach, Italy

Dan and I were on our longest road trip haul through Italy yet making our way from Florence in the Tuscany region to Positano on the Amalfi Coast when we came across this gem in Italy’s south.

Towards the end of our trip, we had one last place we wanted to visit which was Positano. Since we were in Florence, that meant making a 6 hour drive to get to the coast! Oops.. didn’t plan that one ahead! On one of the many stops we made along the way, we decided to search and see if there was anything we could do to break up the drive which is where we found this beach. After hours and hours on being on the highway, we caught our first glimpse of the ocean and we started smiling immediately. We turned left onto the road which lines the beach and had the most beautiful mountain view ahead of us - it reminded me of Hawaii

We parked the car and made our way down one of the little sandy alleyways between the holiday houses to the beach. We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around and relaxing on the sand, taking a break from all that driving. We got to see the sun set over the ocean which is something I’ve only ever seen twice before in my life and we noticed that all the people on this beach were just locals - not another tourist in sight! For this reason, I’d rather not name the beach we found and help keep it a locals secret/haven from the tourist saturated cities in Italy.

It was the perfect way to end off the day and we felt rejuvenated to keep driving through the night to make it to our destination of Positano - which is coming in the next blog post!

If you want to watch videos of all our travels through Italy, I vlogged every single day and you can find them all on my YouTube channel!

Creative Travel Photography Ideas in Florence, Italy

A few days into our week in Italy, Dan and I left Venice in the late morning and made our way towards Florence in the region of Tuscany. Our first stop of the day was in Fiesole, a small, quiet town at the top of a hill with impressive views of Florence. We had a late lunch (I had gnocchi and Dan grabbed a pizza) while booking our accommodation for that night and the night afterwards. Once we knew where we were staying in Florence, we decided to head into the city!

We dropped off our bags and our car at the hotel and set off to see Florence by foot. Oh my, I fell in love with Florence - it’s such a beautiful city with a magic about it I can’t quite put into words. Our first stop was the Duomo aka the Florence Cathedral which is SUCH a beautiful building, so of course we ended up taking hundreds of photos of and with it! We also made our way around the city to see Ponte Vecchio - the medieval bridge with houses and shops built on top of it - Palazzo Vecchio, Uffizi Gallery, Santa Croce Basilica and so many other things along the way that I can’t even remember now!

On our last day in Florence, Dan and I woke up early, checked out of our hotel and drove to the Piazzale Michelangelo which is a plaza with the most beautiful views of Florence. If you’ve ever googled Florence, almost all the pictures you see of it are taken from this spot!

I vlogged our entire week in Italy, which you can find on my YouTube channel! I can’t wait to share my next blog post where we start making our way further down south of Italy and find a beautiful locals-only beach.

Portrait and Travel Photography in Venice, Italy

Dan and I had just spent 2 dreamy days road tripping through South Tyrol, exploring all the beautiful spots the Italian Alps had to offer including amazing reflection lakes at sunrise and towering mountains. Sadly it was time for us to leave though, to continue on our trip through Italy and explore our next city: Venice.

Dan and I left South Tyrol via a winding road through the mountains. We didn’t want to take the highway to Venice as we wanted to cling onto the mountains for as long as possible! And even though the drive was twice as long - so 4 hours instead of 2 - it was SO worth it. The majority of the drive to Venice was just up and down mountain roads with the most amazing views. We passed so many small and big towns built in the middle of the mountains and took so many photos along the way, it was so beautiful and a road trip I’m never going to forget.

While we had a taste for how hot it was in Italy during August while we were in Milan, the cool temperatures of the Alps made us completely forget about it all. Until we reached Venice. Once we descended the safety of high altitudes and reached the city, the temperatures quickly soared back up to 40+ degrees Celsius, yuck!

Dan and I booked a hotel just outside of Venice and caught the train into the city. We spent the rest of our afternoon and evening walking around the very busy streets and little alleyways of Venice. I had my camera glued to my hands snapping everything that caught my eye!

If you want to see more of our time during Venice, be sure to check out my vlog! I also vlogged every day during our week in Italy, which you can see all the videos on my YouTube Channel!

Once we left Venice, we started making our way to the beautiful city of Florence - which I completely fell in love with! I can't wait to share that blog post next week!

Early Morning Landscape Photography. Lago di Braies in the Italian Alps

Early Morning Landscape Photography. Lago di Braies in the Italian Alps

After spending our morning in Milan, Dan and I started our long road trip to the Italian Alps. What started off as just highway for about an hour, quickly turned into one of the most beautiful and scenic roads I’ve ever been on - mountains surrounding us and so many quaint little houses and endless vineyards built into every corner of the mountains.

Since we were on a highway still, there weren’t too many places we could pull over to take pictures but you can see all the view along the way in my vlog! I also vlogged every day while we were in Italy, and you can check out all those videos on my YouTube Channel.

We fell asleep to the sound of rain and woke up at a cold 5am ready to catch the sunrise at Pragser Wildsee also known as Lago di Braies. Since this lake is surrounded and thus sheltered by mountains, it was a perfect mirror reflection early in the morning duplicating the landscape surrounding it. It is honestly one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen in my life and I still look back on our early mornings here wondering if it was really real.

Dan and I spent the next couple of days driving around the Dolomities, stopping every few seconds on the side of the road for photos because South Tyrol is actually one of the most picturesque places I’ve ever been lucky enough to visit. We visited Lago di Braies several times, saw the Dolomites, visited the World UNESCO Heritage Site and basically were just constantly in awe of the landscapes around us.

One of my favourite and most memorable moments was driving back towards our accommodation and noticing all this fog building up on the surface of a lake. We quickly turned off the road, parked and started walking towards it to take photos, it was so quiet and absolutely peaceful. While we taking pictures, the fog quickly started travelling towards us and soon enough we were drenched in rain but I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

It was hard to leave the Italian Alps. It was only day 3 of our week in Italy, but it had quickly become one of my favourite places I have ever travelled to in the world. I know I’ll be back one day! For now, our road trip continues and we make our way from the Alps to Venice which all the photos will be coming from there in my next blog post!

Urban Travel Photography Ideas in Milan, Italy

Urban Travel Photography Ideas in Milan, Italy

Dan and I had been living in Gdansk, Poland for a couple of months before deciding we wanted to head out and explore a new part of Europe. We hopped online and found cheap tickets on a budget European airline from Gdansk to Milan and then Naples back to Gdansk, so we bought them and off we went! I vlogged our entire trip through Italy and will be posting all the videos on my YouTube channel + the episodes for each day here on my blog too! I'm a little behind on my blogging at the moment, so you can actually watch most of our week on my channel already - stay tuned for all the photos that I will be posting here weekly though!

Our first stop in Italy was Milan. I have always wanted to see the Milan Duomo, so I was really excited that we were heading there first. We landed at Bergamo airport, a lovely little city about an hour out of Milan surrounded by beautiful mountains. We hopped in our hire car and drove straight for the city. Dan and I's usual overseas driving includes Dan driving and me giving him directions on which lane to stick to and where to turn - we make a good team!

When we arrived in Milan and started walking towards the city centre, we realised we had completely underestimated the heat of an Italian summer. I thought Australia was hot in summer, and while it comes quite close, to be honest I think Italy might just be that little bit hotter! To be fair, we were also visiting while Italy and all of South Europe was experiencing a heatwave so intense they named it the "Lucifer heatwave"!

As we turned the corner, my first glimpse of the Duomo came into sight and I was taken away. The sheer size of this building was so overwhelming! Not to mention the longer and closer you look at it, you start taking in all the beautiful details, the colours - everything about it was amazing! We spent a couple of hours walking around the main square in Milan and sat down for a lasagna and pizza lunch and decided that we were happy enough to head off. Our main destination was still a while away from us!

Back in the car, we settled in for a long 4 hour road trip to the epitome of why we came to Italy in the first place - we were heading to the Italian Alps! The drive there was nothing short of amazing. What started off as a normal highway, quickly turned into a (140km/hour) road surrounded by mountains, old buildings perched up on the edges of cliffs and endless amounts of vineyards planted in any patch of land up and down the side of the mountains. Although it was a super long 4 hour drive, the sights along the way completely made up for it and we spent our entire time taking photos and awing at the views just outside our window.

As soon as it became dark, we arrived at Pragser Wildsee, also known as Lago di Braies. I was so excited to see it, I didn't care that it was pitch black so we parked the car and set off for a walk to visit the reflective lake, which delivered everything it promised me from the pictures I've seen online. We took a few long exposures and happily went back to the car where we "camped" ready to wake up to visit it again the next morning at sunrise which will be in next week's blog post!

Travel Photography During an 8 hour Layover in Tokyo, Japan

By June this year, I had spent more time overseas than I have in Australia. When I returned from my trip to Lebanon for @fullyrawkristina, Dan and I made a super last minute decision to keep that trend going and we bought tickets for Europe! We wanted to see what it was like to live on the other side of the world for a little while, so as quickly as I was finally home, we packed our bags and headed to the airport the next day.

Our first flight left Sydney at night and we arrived in Tokyo, Japan in the early hours of the morning with an 8 hour layover ahead of us before our night flight. As I mentioned in my vlog from the trip, in the past I would have never been brave enough to leave the airport on a longer layover. But this time, I wanted to make the most of ever second I had and take the chance to explore the city!

We sleepily left Haneda Airport and made our way to the train. On our way to Shibuya Crossing, I couldn’t unglue my eyes from the window. I love seeing a new city for the first time - there are so many things to take in and to learn. I love seeing the way the light falls differently compared to what I’m used to, I love seeing the new buildings, the water, the graffiti, watching the locals on the train with us.

The rest of our layover was spent wandering the city, eating, lots of coffee drinking and taking photos of all the sights we saw around us. Our time in Tokyo was way too short and we are looking forward to coming back one day soon and spend some proper time to look around! But it was nice to get a glimpse at a city that I’ve heard and seen so much of through other people’s photographs.

Next stop, Poland!

I can’t wait to see you all in my next blog post which will be all about our first days back in beautiful Poland.

Hawaii Travel Photography with FullyRawKristina | Island Life

Our time in Maui was nothing short of blissful. It is the island I was most excited to visit and the perfect way to end our trip. Kristina and I missed our flight from Kauai and ended up landing on Maui late in the afternoon where we met up with Ellen Fisher.

Our first night in Maui was spent picnicking on the beach watching the sun set over the ocean and the stars rise. We stayed up late talking and planning the next day’s adventures. We spent our last day on this beautiful island hiking to waterfalls on the Road to Hana and ending it all with a road trip to the foggy mountains where we danced barefoot under the rain in the middle of a closed road.

Maui you were magical and I can’t wait to come back and explore more soon!

I vlogged every day during my trip to Hawaii with @fullyrawkristina! Be sure to see the videos throughout this blog post or have a look at them on my YouTube channel!

And if you missed the other two parts from Oahu and Kauai, be sure to see them here:
