The GM 85mm f1.4 is an FE mount prime lens for Sony cameras. I am using this lens for portrait photography on the Sony A7iii. A few years ago I switched systems from the Canon 5Dmkiv DSLR to the Sony A7iii mirrorless camera. My first lens purchase the Zeiss 35mm f1.4, since the 35mm is my favourite and most used focal length. My second lens purchase for wedding and portrait photography is this GM 85mm f1.4.

Watch the video below to hear my thoughts on this 85mm lens for portrait photography. I share SOOC, 100% crop photo samples so you can see the image quality and sharpness. We test the autofocus speed and accuracy in various lighting situations such as back-light, shade and blue hour. I also share my experiences capturing movement with this 85mm f1.4 lens.

Sony released an upgrade to the Zeiss 50mm f1.4 in April, 2021. They announced the GM 50mm f1.2, which is an absolutely amazing lens! This gives me hope that Sony might also be working on an 85mm f1.2 lens in the near future. F1.4 is more than enough to create background to foreground separation with my subjects as you can see in my final images. However f1.2 has a special look when it comes to taking closeup portraits. I love capturing headshots where my subject’s face is tack sharp and the rest of the image melts away into beautiful bokeh.

If you are after a budget-friendly 85mm, you might want to check out my real world review of the Samyang 85mm f1.4. This Samyang 85 comes in very close to matching the performance and quality of the GM 85mm f1.4, but is a more budget friendly option.
